Physical Rehabilitation Case Study

"Codie" is a 8 year old male German Shepherd dog who was presented to Veterinary Rehabilitation of Ohio (VRO) for physical rehabilitation following back surgery. Before surgery he had become acutely paralyzed in his rear legs and had back pain. Diagnostic tests revealed a disk herniation compressing the spinal cord between his 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebrae. Surgery was successfully  performed to remove the disc compression. Codie was improving slowly after surgery. While he could now move his legs and was more comfortable, he was still unable to walk 2 months after surgery. It was at this time more aggressive physical rehabilitation was sought and he was brought to VRO.

Codie can move his legs but does not have the strength nor the coordination to walk.

As with every new VRO case, Codie was initially evaluated in order to create an individualized recovery program. This included: past medical/surgical history, current medications, joint range of motion, muscle mass, gait/balance analysis, analysis of relevant movement tasks, and palpation. After this was done a set of goals and the proper rehabilitation schedule was outlined. Codie began his first rehabilitation session that day.

Notice the difference buoyancy makes for Codie. He can now place his paws properly and is able to work on muscle development and coordination much more effectively.

Codie made steady improvement utilizing proper veterinary physical rehabilitation. VRO rehabilitation services utilized included hydrotherapy, aquatic treadmill exercise, range-of-motion activities, and balance exercises. The owners were instructed by the VRO staff how to provide proper assisted at-home exercises. This course of rehabilitation resulted in dramatic improvement for Codie. Codie's strength, balance, muscle mass, coordination, and joint range-of-motion improved significantly after less than 2 months of physical rehabilitation.

Codie can now walk without assistance and has only mild imbalance. He continues to improve weekly.

Codie's story and results are not atypical. Many patients, including those with spinal and orthopedic problems have benefited from physical rehabilitation at VRO.
